DIRECTION INDICATOR Direction Indicator

Navigation is based on a normal magnetic compass. However in an aircraft which is climbing, descending or turning the compass tends to be inaccurate and/or difficult to read. The Direction Indicator is driven by a gyro and is synchronized with the compass before take off and at intervals during the flight. In flight its gyro property will enable it to give a more accurate indication of whatever heading the aircraft is following.
