ARTIFICIAL HORIZON (AH) or ATTITUDE INDICATOR (AI)

This instrument is also known as a gyro horizon. It is probably the most crucial aid for poor visibility fArtificial Horizonlying and hence its position is standardized at the top and centre of the instrument display.

It uses the property of the gyro to remain at a constant attitude or angle, whatever manoeuvre the aircraft is following. Thus with the gyro set to hold position relative to the horizon, the attitude of the aircraft climbing/descending or banking can be displayed to the pilot.

The Artificial Horizon in the picture shows the aircraft in a nose up attitude, this normally means the aircraft is climbing. It also shows that the aircraft is banking to the right.

Note: that the aircraft symbol on the dial is part of the aircraft. So although it may appear that the horizon is the item to have banked, we know that cannot happen and it must therefore be that the aircraft wings are banked relative to the still level horizon.
